What is an orphan?

An orphan is a person who has lost both parents, usually through death. Today the number of orphans worldwide is about 150 million and growing. Childhood is the most beautiful period of our journey here on Earth. The experiences of childhood pave the way to maturity. Who of us ever thinks about how they live and how are they doing?

Why is it that some parents leave their children in an orphanage? To be an orphan is not something to be ashamed of. It is just a misfortune that some of us have. Their way of life is full of obstacles, but they have to be optimistic and believe that the sun will shine brightly and that, a family will open their arms for to them. How happy must a child be when his mother hugs him, when he comes back from school and lays his head in her lap, forgetting about all his problems. For all orphans there is no way to feel this, there is nobody to come home to. These children face stigma and discrimination and are often denied affection, protection, care and support. Many drop out of school and are at risk of exploitation and abuse. As a result, they are more likely to face serious health issues, including HIV and AIDS.

All of us agree that growing children need strong interactive relationships with responsible adults. Besides providing emotional and physical security, such ties help the child grow and learn to cope with an ever-changing world. How does the psychological development of children with orphanage experience compare with that of other people?

When groups of children with orphanage experience are compared with other children with average development, orphans score lower on measures of general intelligence. Growing up with parents is considered to be the optimal social arrangement, with mothers playing a central role. There are some differences within some groups of children but the overall trend is negative for orphaned subjects. Who does not want to hear some pleasant words that our parents often say I LOVE YOU?
